The capital of the state, and its most populous city, Indianapolis, Indiana, is also the county seat of Marion County, located centrally in the middle of the state. It was estimated to have a population of nearly 800,000 as of 2006, making it the 14th largest city in the country, and the third largest Midwestern city, behind Chicago and Detroit. Median annual household income for residents here is just over $40,000. The city’s economy was anchored in government and manufacturing, though the manufacturing industry has been in decline in recent years, and it has now turned toward more industry in the education, health care and financial services sectors.
There are 11 unified public school districts operating the education system here, with the largest Indianapolis Public Schools. There are also several highly ranking private schools, including Catholic schools like Bishop Chatard, Roncalli, Cardinal Ritter and Scecina, and other private schools like Brebeuf, Park Tutor, Cathedral and the Culver Military Academy. Plenty of post-secondary education institutions are found in the city as well, including Brown Mackie College, Butler University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Indiana Wesleyan University, Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, Marian College, Martin University, The Art Institute of Indianapolis and the University of Indianapolis.
The city is probably best known for its annual Indianapolis 500 race, which takes place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway each year on Memorial Day weekend. The NASCAR Allstate 400 at the Brickyard is also held at the speedway each year, and the city, as home to the NCAA’s headquarters, hosts the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments each year. The city is home to two professional sports teams, the NFL’s Colts and the NBA’s Pacers, as well as the triple-A Indians baseball team. The city has its own international airport, a local bus system and is connected by the Amtrak rail system.
Companies headquartered here include Eli Lilly and Company, Brightpoint, Wellpoint, American United Life (OneAmerica), Republic Airways Holdings, Simon Property Group & Hunt Construction Group, Finish Line, Inc., Duke Realty Corp. and Teleservices Direct. There are several large hospitals providing medical services in the city, as well as the state’s only medical school. Attractions in Indianapolis include the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, the largest children's museum in the world, the Indianapolis Zoo; the Indianapolis Museum of Art; the NCAA Hall of Champions and Conner Prairie, a living history museum.
