A large and rather affluent suburb of Indianapolis in Hamilton County, Carmel, Indiana, is located on the north side of the state’s capital city, about 25 miles away. It is one of several of the area’s wealthier suburbs clustered north of the city. As of 2007, a special census put Carmel’s population at almost 70,000.

The community takes up an area of almost 18 square miles, and the median annual household income for residents in the city is around $95,000, well above both state and local averages. The site where the city lies was once home to a community called Bethlehem until 1874, when it became Carmel. It is easily reachable from Indianapolis, and residents of Carmel can enjoy all of the amenities and attractions that the capital city has to offer while still living in a quieter neighborhood. Students living in the community attend Carmel Clay Schools, which consists of 11 elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school. There are 12 four-year colleges and universities with 30 miles of the city, giving those in the area looking to enhance their education plenty of options. The city’s St Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital provides medical services and attention to area residents. Carmel is home to the headquarters of Conseco, Midwest ISO, Pearson Education and ITT Technical Institute.

Attractions in Carmel include a water park and large fitness center in the city’s Central Park opened in 2007; Flowing Well Park, which has its own artesian well; and the Monon Trail bicycle trail that starts in downtown Indianapolis and runs through here. There are more than 175 public golf courses within a 30-mile radius of Carmel, ensuring golf enthusiasts are never short on options. The community recently began construction on its new Arts and Design District. When completed, it will feature retail space, restaurants, office space, apartments, a hotel, a performing arts center, amphitheater and performance hall.
