Cumberland Real Estate Information

A small town near the capital of the state, Cumberland, Indiana, lies split between Hancock and Marion counties, about 10 miles east of Indianapolis. The area is estimated to have a population of around 6,000 residents, with the population nearly evenly split between the two counties. Cumberland residents are estimated at having an annual median household income of nearly $60,000, making it a strongly middle-class neighborhood.

The area makes up an area of almost two square miles, lying just off of Interstate 70, and right outside the Interstate 465 loop that surrounds the region. The median age for residents of Cumberland is about 34 years old. The town was first platted in 1831 and named after a town in Maryland. It established its first post office in 1842. Near the turn of the century, it was home to just about 500 residents. It finally officially incorporated as a city in 1951.

Most residents of the town own their own homes, with an ownership rate of almost 75 percent. There are several colleges and universities nearby in downtown Indianapolis and throughout the greater region where residents can take courses to further their education or for fun, or pursue degree studies of all levels. Many residents are fans of and attend games for Indianapolis’s local sports teams: The Indianapolis Colts of NFL football and the Indiana Pacers of NBA basketball. There is also a minor-league baseball team, the Indianapolis Indians.
