As of 2007, the community was estimated to have a population of more than 65,000, a huge increase, as the city’s population was only around 7,000 as recently as 1990.
Fishers takes up an area of just over 21 square miles. It originally was named Mudsock, but residents changed its name to Fishers Switch, to reference a railroad assignment, and later was shortened to simply “Fishers” in 1908. Median annual income for households in Fishers is more than $86,000, well above other state averages, making it a rather affluent community.
Children and teens in the community attend educational institutions administered by the Hamilton Southeastern Schools district. The district includes 11 elementaries, two intermediate schools, two junior high schools, a middle school and two high schools. There are more than a dozen colleges and universities within the region, particularly in Indianapolis. Annual events held in Fishers include the Fishers Freedom Festival, which features a parade, a 5K and a fireworks show, the Flavor of Fishers and the Fishers Renaissance Faire in early October at Conner Prairie.
Attractions in Fishers include the Artists' Studio, a community theater; Ben and Ari's, a mini-golf course, arcade and duckpin-bowling facility; and Pinheads Entertainment Complex. Fishers Banquet and Conference Center offers a space to hold special events and Geist Reservoir is one of the most popular sites in the area, a large body of water where residents can fish, ski and otherwise enjoy the water during warmer months. The other main attraction is Conner Prairie, a living history museum that showcases life as it was in Indiana during different periods in the 1800s.
