Speedway Real Estate Information

A mid-sized suburban community in the capital city area, Speedway, Indiana, is a town that makes up an area of almost five square miles, just south of downtown Indianapolis. The community lies within the confines of Wayne Township in Marion County, and lies just off the Interstate 465 loop that surrounds the Indianapolis area. Residents here have an annual median household income of just over $42,000, in 2007.

The community was home to a population of almost 13,000 as of the 2000 census. It was officially incorporated in 1926 and then incorporated into the Indianapolis consolidated government in 1970. Though it is technically a part of Indianapolis, Speedway still has its own town council, police department, fire department, street department, parks and recreation department, school system and public library.

The city is best known for its namesake, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, site of the Indianapolis 500 IndyCar race each Memorial Day weekend and of the Nascar race, the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. The track brings the area more than a million visitors each year, and also has its own golf course, Brickyard Crossing Golf Course. There are also plenty of attractions in nearby Indianapolis proper, from museums, theaters and musical shows to shopping, nightlife and comedy shows.

Students living here attend educational institutions run by the School Town of Speedway, which has one high school, one middle school and four elementary schools, with a total enrollment of approximately 1,650 students. Indianapolis itself is home to around a dozen colleges and universities, from large public four-year institutions to smaller, private four-year schools and two-year community and specialty colleges. Speedway has two city parks, Leonard Park and Meadowood Park, and its library, Speedway Public Library. The nearest hospital just three miles away in Indianapolis proper, and shopping can be done at the Speedway Shopping Center.
